Headline of the day…

CLOUD NINE
The Daily Mirror report on happy times for Arsenal and for Emmanuel Adebayor, who scored in his ninth consecutive game to put the Gunners five points clear at the top.

Hold the back page…

9 TO 5
The Sun use those two statistics in their headline, but clearly got so caught up in singing Dolly Parton songs to themselves that they didn’t bother working out if the headline made any sense. It doesn’t really.

HEY BIG SENDER
Unusually, we quite like this Daily Star pun, a tribute to
Philippe Senderos, who opened the scoring against Blackburn Rovers last night.

A KISS FOR THE TITLE
It’s not Valentine’s Day yet, but The Independent are clearly feeling romantic with their image of Senderos blowing kisses. Well, it would be romantic if he didn’t look like, well, Philippe Senderos.

SWEET FA
Meanwhile, the row rages on over the Premier League’s ‘international round’, and the Daily Mail say that even the ‘mandarins’ at the FA are against it. It’s getting fruity…

WHELAN BREAKS RANKS
Dave Whelan hasn’t had a good moan about anything for absolutely ages, so it was almost inevitable that something would annoy him and it’s this issue. The Daily Express say that he’s against it, as well as launching their own campaign – Kick Out The 39th Step. Oh dear…

SCUDAMORE SIGNALS HIS INTENT
Typically, the Daily Telegraph suck any sense of fun out of the story and manage to make it all read like an escapee from the business pages. We’d tell you what it said, but frankly we don’t want to read it.

GAME’S UP WHEN FIXTURES ARE FIXED
Des Kelly in the Daily Mail says that the Premier League’s global plans are the thin end of the wedge – what about the way fixtures are being arranged already?

SCUDAMORE’S FOREIGN VENTURE ATTRACTS BLOGGERS AND MAGGOTS
The Guardian’s
Richard Williams looks at the blogging response to the plans, both positive and negative.

FANS LEAD BACKLASH OVER eBAY SALES OF MUNICH MEMENTOS
Meanwhile, The Times report on the
Manchester United fans who have been trying to cash in on Sunday’s Munich memorial scarves by selling them on eBay.

ROO GETS THE BEST OUT OF UNITED
Alan Curbishley in the Daily Express highlights the importance of Wayne Rooney to United as well as blaming the midweek international friendlies for some flat performances at the weekend.

GIGGS SAYS THERE MUST BE NO REPEAT OF CITY LOSS
Ryan Giggs warns his team-mates that they cannot afford to drop any more points, but The Independent also look at the number of United players who completed 90 minutes in the internationals.

BENITEZ FALLS BEHIND, SAYS REDKNAPP
Former
Liverpool player Jamie Redknapp won’t be very welcome at Anfield any time soon after saying in the Daily Telegraph that Rafael Benitez is further away from making them genuine title contenders than he has ever been.

LIVERPOOL WILL NEVER WIN THE LEAGUE WITH RAFA
He spells it out quite bluntly in The Sun.

TOON STILL LOOK TO AL
Meanwhile, the Daily Star reckon that
Kevin Keegan is still hoping to get Alan Shearer to join him at Newcastle United.

WOR KEV: I’M POOR KEV
In the Daily Mirror Keegan is already starting to feel a bit sorry for himself and insisting that he needs money to spend to turn things around at Newcastle.

English Premier League News

Moyes: Vaughan must wait

Everton striker James Vaughan has been urged to show some patience by boss David Moyes, as he battles for a regular first-team spot at Goodison Park.

The 19-year-old England Under-21 international has been plagued by injuries during his fledgling career and has had to settle for a place on the bench since recovering from a shoulder problem.

Moyes told the Daily Express: “He has missed a lot of football and, even this season, he missed the first three months with a dislocated shoulder.

“He needs to be a little bit patient. Centre-forward is probably the hardest position on the pitch and when you are 19 and getting in the squads, you should be pleased with that.

“What James has is that infectious attitude, enthusiasm, aggression and now we need to teach him a bit more about the game. If we do that, then he has a good future.

“We have said to both James and Victor Anichebe that the standard is stepping up here and you have to step up with it.

“Both of them have to do that because the club is changing. It is a balancing act for me and it can be difficult.”

Marcus has Reading faith

Reading goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann believes there is enough quality in the squad to keep the club in the Premier League.

The Royals slipped further into the relegation mire after losing for the seventh consecutive time last weekend.

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Everton left Steve Coppell’s side languishing in 18th place in the league table and without a win since a 2-1 success over Sunderland on December 22.

However, despite claims the Royals could be heading for a return to the Championship, experienced keeper Hahnemann believes they will successfully stave off the threat of relegation.

“The squad we have now, with a few exceptions, finished eighth last season. So obviously we have enough within it to be okay,” he told the club’s official website.

“Being in the relegation zone won’t change the way we do things one little bit.

“Okay, we haven’t had the best results lately, but the performance at Everton was great.

“We knew that going to Goodison would be tough because Everton are a very good team.

“But we also knew that when we play well, opposition teams have to worry about us – and we proved that at Everton, we just didn’t have quite enough.

“If we had played every game like we played at Everton, we wouldn’t be in this position, that’s the bottom line.

“Now we’ll have some extra pressure on us and we’ll find out who has got the balls to handle it. It’s as simple as that.

“I don’t think it will go to the last day of the season. I definitely think it will be sorted before then.”

Barton cleared by FA verdict

The Football Association have decided to take no further action against Newcastle United’ Joey Barton for his weekend clash with Aston Villa’s Shaun Maloney.

Barton appeared to aim a punch at the Scotland international during the Magpies’ 4-1 defeat at Villa Park, but the FA have opted not to take the matter any further after viewing video footage of the incident.

The FA had decided to take a second look at the clash after it went unreported by match referee Lee Mason, who didn’t see the two players’ tussle during the game.

Twenty-five-year-old former Manchester City schemer Barton was making just his third appearance for the Magpies after some well-publicised off-field problems.

He had previously played ten times for Newcastle following his summer move north, having suffered a foot injury during a pre-season game against Carlisle United.

Fergie predicts tight finish

Sir Alex Ferguson believes the title race will go right to the wire despite Manchester United slipping five points behind leaders Arsenal.

United lost 2-1 to city rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday and the Gunners took full advantage after coasting to a 2-0 success over Blackburn Rovers 24 hours later.

Third-placed Chelsea also dropped points over the weekend after being held to a goalless stalemate by Liverpool.

But despite seeing the gap at the top increase to its largest margin for weeks, Ferguson is confident the race for this year’s Premier League will produce a nail-biting finish.

“It was an important weekend for Arsenal in that ourselves and Chelsea dropped points,” Ferguson told Sky Sports.

“But points will be dropped by the top teams. There is a long way to go and it makes it interesting now. It’s going to be a really good, tight finish.

“It’s something the neutrals will all be enthralled by. We know the job we’ve got to do. Arsenal still have to come to Old Trafford and they have got to go to Chelsea.

“It’s like I said at the start of the season – I think it will go to the wire.”
